Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra Loses S Pen Bluetooth Functionality for a Slimmer Design

The Galaxy S25 Ultra has made a significant change to the S Pen that might leave some fans disappointed. Samsung has removed the Bluetooth functionality from the S Pen, which means the days of Air gestures, camera control, and other Bluetooth-powered features are now behind us. The S Pen will now function just like the early versions of the accessory, limited to writing and drawing on the screen without any extra features.

The History of the S Pen

To give some context, the S Pen has always been a standout feature in Samsung’s Galaxy Note series, starting as a basic stylus. With the Note 9, Samsung introduced Bluetooth support, enabling users to perform tasks like Air gestures, controlling media, taking pictures, and even scrolling through photos. The S Pen has evolved over time, but the Galaxy S25 Ultra takes a step backward by removing the Bluetooth functionality.

What Has Changed

  • The new S Pen still has the 0.7mm tip and 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity, which means it should still provide an excellent experience for writing and drawing.
  • No Bluetooth means no Air Actions or camera shutter control, and Samsung has justified this change by saying that not enough people were actually using these features. According to the company, most S Pen users only used it for basic functions like writing and sketching.
  • The pen no longer has an internal battery, which eliminates the need for wireless charging and helps make both the pen and phone slimmer.

The Upside

Although the removal of Bluetooth functionality may seem like a downgrade, there are some benefits:

  • Without the internal battery and charging coils, the S Pen is slimmer and lighter.
  • The Galaxy S25 Ultra itself is reportedly narrower and thinner, and even the screen size has increased by 0.1 inches due to the smaller S Pen.
  • The removal of Bluetooth also allows for a larger heatsink in the phone, which should help manage the heat produced by the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor.

Is It Worth the Trade-off?

For many, the S Pen’s Bluetooth features may not be a dealbreaker, as most users are content with using it for basic tasks. However, for those who enjoyed the advanced Bluetooth functions, this change might be disappointing. Ultimately, the decision on whether the trade-off is worth it depends on personal preferences and how much you relied on the extra features.

Stay tuned as more details emerge, and decide if the new Galaxy S25 Ultra still meets your expectations.
